My name is Michael Farina, a candidate for Planning and Zoning Commission in the Town of Haddam, this coming Election Day. My extended family has lived in Haddam for generations. After a long career elsewhere, and retirement, I chose to live here because of the natural amenities, active social live and proximity to good transportation. I would also like to serve our community in a small way as a member of the P&Z.

My background includes planning and management responsibilities as the West Coast Director of Studio Operations at ABC Television. A noteworthy project was Good Morning America. Prior to moving to Haddam 5 years ago I served on the Economic Development Commission in the towns of Coventry and Willington CT. I also served on the Main Street Initiative planning group in Coventry. Locally I am a member of the Haddam Economic Development Committee, Higganum Vision Group, Haddam Historical Society and the Knights of Columbus at St Peters. I am also a member of the Director’s Guild of America.   I have a degree from the University of Hartford.

The key challenges facing our town’s Planning and Zoning Commission are; the need to maintain strict fairness to all parties, to exercise competency in our land use regulations, to respect our history, while also remaining open minded about development that will enhance our tax base. We need to consider geographical limitations of the site, and utilize creative ways to protect the environment. I believe it is important to listen to all interested parties when gathering facts. I believe it is important to respect the competencies and resources of other boards and commissions as well as neighborhood interests when reviewing proposals.

I have heard from many in town, that they just want a chance to raise their families, educate their children well, earn a living locally, grow old in their homes, or shop in the town they call their “home town”. I do too, and believe with Planning and Zoning we can help make Haddam the best town it can be for all
